Web page Content & Meta Tags
1. The
content and keyword layout of your pages
will be the most significant factor most search
engines use in determining how high you'll rank.
Knowing how many times to repeat a keyword and
where to place those keywords is the real secret
to achieving top 10 rankings. External factors
such as incoming links to your site will also
play a role in your rankings. Top rankings in
the search engines are the key to bringing new
traffic and visibility for your Web site.
2. Page
Title
Search
engines will capture the title from your site
and display this in the search results. Use this
to your best advantage. Instead of just putting
your company name, have it also describe your
company. Keep your title length to 70
characters, and use relevant keywords. Make sure
that you make your title a coherent sentence, or
you may be rejected. A good example is:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Your
Company Name - Discount Jewelry and Watches in
New York</TITLE>
3. META Tags
These are hidden parts of the HTML code of your
web site that some search engines use in listing
your site, and gives you greater control over
what information these search engines list about
your site. Your success in ranking with the
search engines depends a great deal on how well
you create them. You can create these yourself,
or have our professionals do them for you. The
following is an example of where META Tags fit
in your web site code:
<HTML>
<HEAD><TITLE>Pink Poodles Inc.-Dog
Grooming Service</TITLE>
<META NAME="Keywords"
content="pet grooming, palo alto,
dog">
<META NAME="description"
content="We specialize in grooming pink
poodles.".>
</HEAD>
Keep the
following in mind:
• Restrict
description to 150 characters.
• The keywords can
include up to 1000 characters of text, however,
place your most important keywords and phrases
at the top as different search engines read
differing character lengths.
• Research shows
that the majority of people enter keyword
searches in lower case, so we recommend having
your META Tag keywords lower-case.
• Research shows
that 65% of users enter phrases in their
searches. Compose your keywords with that in
mind.
• Many search
engines will disregard your submission request
if you use the same keyword too many times.
Combine your keywords into phrases, for example:
if I wanted to use the phrases pet grooming and
services for pets, I'd combine them to read:
services for pet grooming. This way, I won't
overuse a certain keyword and risk getting
rejected from an engine and the spiders that
check these tags recognize each individual word.
• If you're
concerned about plurals, there's no need to be
redundant within your keywords. For example: if
you were concerned that someone would type pets
or pet into a search, we recommend putting the
plural, pets, in your keyword list. This
eliminates the concern of overuse of a keyword.
• If your site
uses frames, be sure to include your Meta Tags
in your main HTML file which is the file
containing the tags.
Additional
recommendations:
• Check for your listings once per month by
conducting a search using your preferred
keywords. Resubmit any URLs not listed in their
database. Aaron Group provides a service that
will search for all of your URLs under any
keyword or keyphrase combination and will
generate a detailed Ranking Report for you.
• Don't use
tiny text. Some search engines see it as
spamming and may exclude your submission.
• Don't use
invisible text in your code. At one point, this
was a valid method of getting more keyword bang
for your buck, but the majority of the search
engines now see it as spamming and may exclude
or ban your site.
